Iraq is a small price?

by: Rick

Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 09:44:15 AM PDT

Senator John Kerry wrote a brief piece at Huffington Post illustrating just how careless some people are about the many lives being lost in Iraq.

And John Edwards bought air time tonight after President Bush's speech about Iraq. That might be the best two minutes on tv this week.

Obama's Iraq Plan,

by: Rick

Wed Sep 12, 2007 at 10:40:12 AM PDT

Marcos over at Daily Kos has summarized Obama's plan and the current state of the political arena with regards to Iraq right here. It's a well written, well thought out, and a good read.

Missing from that piece though is a reference to Obama's other words this morning, noting that the administration sounds today about Iran like they used to sound about Iraq:

"We hear eerie echoes of the run-up to the war in Iraq in the way that the President and Vice President talk about Iran. They conflate Iran and al Qaeda. They issue veiled threats. They suggest that the time for diplomacy and pressure is running out when we haven't even tried direct diplomacy. Well George Bush and Dick Cheney must hear - loud and clear - from the American people and the Congress: you don't have our support, and you don't have our authorization for another war."

for Saturday, think No New Coal

by: Rick

Sat Sep 08, 2007 at 11:14:15 AM PDT

The best thing on the net today might be A Siegels' piece on No new Coal over at Daily Kos. A moratorium against new coal power generation plants would be one of the most important steps we could make in the foreseeable future. Check it out.

Friday's truth - not at all convenient

by: Rick

Fri Sep 07, 2007 at 02:29:41 AM PDT

The environmental impact of the livestock industry (or the purchasers and consumers of meat, depending on how you want to see it) is thoughtfully and bluntly discussed in this realistic piece at HuffPost. Countless studies show time and again that we all need to dramatically cut back or eliminate our consumption of beef and other meats.

thursday's child is full of it ?

by: Rick

Thu Sep 06, 2007 at 08:29:32 AM PDT

The Washington Post on Thursday has a must read piece questioning the accuracy of "The U.S. military's claim that violence has decreased sharply in Iraq in recent months." Read it and keep the truth in mind.

Everyone everywhere should read this article from Rolling Stone - slice of which :

what did America's contractors give us for that money? They built big steaming shit piles, set brand-new trucks on fire, drove back and forth across the desert for no reason at all and dumped bags of nails in ditches. For the most part, nobody at home cared, because war on some level is always a waste. But what happened in Iraq went beyond inefficiency, beyond fraud even. This was about the business of government being corrupted by the profit motive to such an extraordinary degree that now we all have to wonder how we will ever be able to depend on the state to do its job in the future. If catastrophic failure is worth billions, where's the incentive to deliver success? There's no profit in patriotism, no cost-plus angle on common decency. Sixty years after America liberated Europe, those are just words, and words don't pay the bills.

The rest of the article is amazing and astounding,   here.

The great great Luciano Pavarotti passed away yesterday at the age of 71, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.  Huffington Post has   a thorough biography of the fine tenor.

something to read today...

by: Rick

Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 09:43:40 AM PDT

Perhaps the most important thing a person could read today is this little ditty about just how fast climate change is coming.

In North America, our federal governments are still doing nothing significant about it.  What is it that the conservatives think they are conserving?

Also, a clarification at Huffpost today, beginning with

The Government Accountability Office report was released today, and it quickly became evident where the White House pressured for change from the original version leaked to the Washington Post.

In last week's Washington Post story, it was reported that the GAO study would say that Iraqis have failed to meet 15 of 18 benchmarks. In today's report, the GAO sticks with only three benchmarks met, but now has a new grade for benchmarks: "Partially met."

The entire thing is a good read.

September arrives and somethings don't change

by: Rick

Tue Sep 04, 2007 at 10:15:21 AM PDT

The LA Times, in advance of the expected 'positive' announcements this month, begins the Fall debates with a look at a number of realities in Iraq, suggesting they all add up to the conclusion that  " the Surge " has failed. It is a strong read, and they make a good case.

Jerome, our friend in Paris, and frequent author at Daily Kos, displays admirable skill crafting a fine illustration of how our votes affect financial trends, and by extension of how our votes affect everything, and reaches out through the traditional media at the same time.

Labor Day good reads...

by: Rick

Mon Sep 03, 2007 at 10:34:08 AM PDT

Over at DailyKos, Litigatormom has an interesting piece about her family's recent trip to china and her first hand look at the staggering pollution that prevails everywhere there.

Actor Alec Baldwin wrote an insightful short take on the Sen. Larry Craig mess today at the Huffington Post, where A Labor Day Report Card can also be found - and is a very good read.

Faith in America has a must-read article on a gay marriage ruling. And Think Progress has a peek at Wolf Blitzer debunking some of the positive spin being generated lately regarding Iraq. Who would have thunk it?

It may not be set to music, but the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies is an art form just the same. In less than 7 years, it has unfolded itself - in an evolving and graceful way - from an idea in a little Philadelphia restaurant into a business network of over 15,000 companies and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Canada. And we can all learn good things from it. More over>

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket            The thinking behind the GREEN WHISTLE campaign is the suggestion that: 'Whistleblowing' is about doing the right thing! Time Magazine ( as above) would agree. And we need all Canadians to be that courageous and insist that their organizations and governments do the right thing for the environment, for health, for justice. Much of the damage that is being done is hidden as well as unnecessary. We need to change a lot of things rapidly - expose wrongs - to your local or national newspaper and/or a relevant organization; Sierra Club Canada? Suzuki Foundation? Environmental Working Group? National Resources Defense Council? Or here at Organic Canadian. Write it here or send it to us. Do the right thing - make a huge difference. If you see a wrong - let's make it right.
